WHEW!

quite a story Doc.

If you have followed the Forgotten Medicine Doc lately. . . he would be suggesting some DMSO for your back and soreness. Good Luck with that and drive safely, my friend.

I was just thinking about DMSO and The Forgotten Doc articles when I read about poor Dr Malone's Back. That stuff is fabulous!

What is in DMSO and where can I buy it? Is it prescription only?

Expand full comment

I buy mine from Jacob Labs.

I would not trust Amazon sellers on products that contain another product (lotion, conditioner, etc). I have bought expensive hair product and face cream on Amazon just to discover it wasn't actually the brand listed at all - it was a cheap lotion/conditioner put into an empty brand name container - which I knew because I still had some left to compare, smell was different as was texture and viscosity. That's happened twice so I don't buy "liquid" products there anymore.

Thank you so much, Shelia. I really appreciate your taking the time to let me know. I saw various brands on Amazon, but I don't trust certain products (like this one) on there either.

If you know a vet, see if he has it. I get mine from my Amish neighbors who work with horses. It’s cheap and 100% pure. Tractor supply has it too.

Thank you Barbara. Do you use it for yourself or your animals? Or both?

I use it on my arthritic joints. I don’t put anything on my cats because their biochemistry is so different from humans I’m afraid of poisoning them.

Thank you for that info! I really appreciate it!

Most farm supply stores will carry it.

Thank you Sandy.

Amazon carries it in many forms.

Thank you for responding. See Sheila Secrist's comment and my response. I saw the various forms on Amazon but didn't choose any. I agree with her on this.

DMSO has been used in veterinary medicine for decades.

My vet bubbled over with enthusiasm. Even got me to buy and try. I'm not sure it helped (wasn't too bad off). The funny taste or was it smell got to me. Then it seemed to fall in disrepute.

I learned about DMSO when one of my horses was injured 30+ years ago. It's been around for around 75 years. I use it on the arthritis in my hands, particularly base of thumb joints. It's amazing. I don't use veterinary DMSO (because I don't know what it might be mixed with) I get the 90% gel solution made for humans from Jacob Labs. One application and the pain and stiffness are relieved for several days. I usually use it before bed so I sleep through the funny taste and my hands feel great in the morning.

That was the first thing I thought of too. as another commenter said, because of perceived odor, it had fallen into disuse in my household. Recently I decided I didn’t care, wanted pain relief and started using it regularly, and wow, it helped so much with regular use, took about 2 same day uses to start really noticing and then 2-4 times a day. Also the odor seemed to subside with continuous use, (more than just getting habituated to it). And it really seemed to help a lot with nerve pain

I finally found it locally. I first heard about it from a customer. Hope to try it soon.

Dr. Malone, I am the President of Finish Line Horse Products and a subscriber to your work. I just received my PSYWAR book, it's great. I would like to help you with your horses, we are a manufacturer--MADE IN THE USA-- of natural supplements and topical products. We are the largest manufacturer of equine poultice in America, probably the world, and I would be pleased to send you samples of our products free of charge. Our poultices can be of great help for horses with sore feet, swelling in the legs, et cetera. We also make some amazing natural supplements, we do not manufacture drugs. You can look at our website here: www.finishlinehorse.com If you care to text me my cell number is 708-369-9950. Keep up the good work!

Sorry to hear about your sore back. A Midwestern Doctor has been writing about DMSO (https://www.midwesterndoctor.com/p/the-remarkable-history-and-safety) and I can attest to its effectiveness, and it might help you recover faster. I injured my ankle last Friday and was expecting to spend a week or two in recovery. I had recently read AMD's article on DMSO and had ordered some. Before application, the pain was so bad that I could not sleep. Within an hour of applying DMSO to the injured ankle, the pain and swelling subsided and the ankle was completely fine by Sunday.

I had not seen your post before saying basically the same!

My wife has ordered some . . . hope it works.

Yikes! Sounds like a dream to be able to live with the horse family you have, if it were the only work you both had. With your schedules and commitments it sounds like it should be a hobby.

I’m so grateful for your in depth farm news not only for how refreshing it is to read about real life but also because I can live vicariously through the images you so eloquently describe and photos you share.

Thank-you for spending soooo much time substacking to the public! It’s a gift and a huge treat. I can say with assurance for all, that your daily news is not taken for granted. Thank-you! I’ll be praying for the deepest of pain relief for you both this week especially. Gos bless you and all the remarkable horses at the event.

Rock has an amazing color contrast flowing up from the hooves and lower legs.

That metallic glinting is truly unbelievable to see in the sun.

I bet it's soft and smooth as a babies bottom.

I doubt you have any trouble finding the right buyer.

A bit of seller remorse when it trailers away to a new home maybe.....

Dr. M., everything you described (and the grimace in your photo) left me with great sympathy for what you and Jill do for your horses. I look forward to hearing more about the weekend events!

I imagine the loss of weight you two have experienced benefited your ability to run around the farm chasing horses! A motorcycle saying "not if but when" can apply to horses, either to their ability to injure themselves or their handlers. Also, expect the unexpected!

Rock is gorgeous and someone will be very lucky to get foals from him.

Farrier business is hard, very hard work and not good on the back for sure. You save $$$$ by doing it yourself. Two of my great grandfathers were farriers. One in England the other in NYC.

All is well that ends well. That showcase trailer was great, a classy video for classy horses.

Safe travels and have a grand time you two at both events.

Wow! I need a nap after reading your exploits. I used to have plenty of bounce and energy. Wish I could get an ounce of Jill’s vitality! Best wishes for all of your Florida adventures!

I didn’t know you were also a farrier! Cool. I know a couple stallions that have been raised naturally, with mares, pasture breed and have geldings as friends. These studs are very well adjusted and mentally healthy. But neither place has other stallions on site so your situation is different. . I ride endurance and these stallions go to rides, camp with other horses, ride on trail with mares and you would never know they are stallions at all. Another friend puts her stud in pasture with the mares and babies and he looks after them all. It’s so nice to see. Enjoy your time in Fl. I’m jealous about Jill training with Pedro…..I love to watch working equitation. And the fact that your conference is in the same place? Very cool! There are no coincidences!

Are you also an inventor as was common w/ blacksmiths? My great grandfather was a German immigrant blacksmith (could body double for John L. Sullivan) and was quite the inventor. WW I made him nervous about his Gernan-ness so he then contributed several inventions to the USG. Then his immigrant Irish wife introduced him full bore to the infamous Irish temper.

10/15/24 UPDATE: You'll find a better formatted note about DMSO at this link: https://substack.com/profile/68304299-big-e/note/c-72695786 [I'll also post a quick new comment in case helpful to others who read later.]

Echoing all the wonder, admiration, and suggestions of others.

Here’s a collection of A Midwestern Doctor’s DMSO articles and sources plus some additional research I’ve done for our own household. Some of this information already was offered by others. (Sorry, I cannot format this nicely in comments, but hoping it will help anyway.)

Formulations:

* Pure liquid (non-diluted, or 70% diluted depending on mfr; some offer additional dilutions)

* Pure gel (70/30 Distilled Water Gel)

* Mixed gel (typically mixed with aloe vera) -- pure gels more common and higher rated in general.

* Gel roller (https://www.amazon.com/stores/page/F0611C4A-218F-4327-BD16-484419129DAE?ingress=2&visitId=a938a41f-0b08-4b4e-a55c-4eb27cab1adb&ref_=ast_bln)

Gel easier to apply and possibly less messy. Liquid less irritating and what AMD uses.

Aloe Vera - Homemade gels can be created by mixing liquid DMSO with pure (at least 99.5%) aloe vera gel.

Topical Application (liquid application): https://www.midwesterndoctor.com/i/148982648/topically-applying-dmso

* Clean skin thoroughly first

* Cotton swab, spray bottle, natural fiber paintbrush, or (possibly best) fingers

* Let dry about 20 minutes before putting on any clothing

Dosing: https://www.midwesterndoctor.com/i/148982648/dosing-dmso

* 70% often ideal, but can be diluted as needed if rashes occur.

* Recommend: Dilute and increase concentration as needed

Diluting: https://www.midwesterndoctor.com/i/148982648/diluting-dmso

* Although DMSO weighs a bit more than water, it's easier just to assume they are the same and use simple math to dilute.

* Example: Start with 70% DMSO, and mix with two parts water and test. Then mix with one part water and test. If that is still tolerable, use 70% without diluting (what most people end up using).

* Mixing DMSO with water will generate heat, which is normal

Skin Reactions: https://www.midwesterndoctor.com/i/148982648/skin-reactions

* Irritated skin (e.g., redness, itching, or burning) normally temporary and passes (and often becomes less likely with subsequent doses of DMSO).

* Higher concentrations of DMSO on the same spot can create scaling on the skin. Try different nearby areas.

* Most skin issues come with 90% rather than 70%.

* DMSO will create NORMAL sensations in the skin (e.g., warmth, a bit of numbness, a pulsation or a prickling).

Advice for Specific Condtions: https://www.midwesterndoctor.com/i/148982648/dmso-applications-for-specific-conditions

* Acute bursitis

* Acute back and neck strains

* Acute Injuries

* Arthritis

* Blisters (60-75%)

* Eczma (atopic dermatitis 40-65%)

* Gout (75-80%)

* Migraine Headaches (50%)

* Restless leg syndrome (60-80%, brush or spray)

* Scars (60-75% daily)

* Spine Issues (70%)

* Sunburns (30-60%, repeat after 3-5 hours)

* Trigeminal Neuralgia

Thank you ever so much for sharing!

First that, while wounded, you have survived a week of hell. Next that, your treasured and super valuable equines are through the worst of their injuries, thanks to their dedicated and able Doctors. Next that your Equestrian Center has survived both hurricanes successfully. Now we engage in positive thoughts for your safe travels and well deserved, safe and rewarding participations! A Great Week to remember!

Surely, your superior eating practices haven't gone to waste for either of you. Happy its paying off. Great proof of the pudding, so to speak.

Your horses share of your weeks happenings, take the prize! As you note, even we majorly involved with horses rarely deal with stallions. Got to ride an aged, 'perfectly mannered' Quarter stallion bareback. He treated me to a small buck (stuck with him). We agreed on his returning to good form.

Spent several years at a stable run by a fellow with a lippizaner and saddlebred, who had schooled at the Austrian school of dressage. Before the stable, he, his daughter and son were in the circus. Love/ed their classical dressage style.

Hope if you or Dr Jill come back with any pix or videos of your/the action this week, you will be able to share at some point.

Safe travels, much success, a sturdy back and many happinesses! 🐎

♡♡♡
