For Native Americans horses represented power. Power to travel, going places, on the hunt, new lands. The Native American who had horses had power and we still measure engines by how much horsepower they have. They are magnificent animals, with great beauty and power to move humans. They are smart too. They know who knows how to ride and can take advantage of neophytes. My grandfather had a stallion, who would take you next to a barbed wire fence or under a tree to brush you off. You had to let him know who was boss. There were also horses who had been ridden a lot who when you put a saddle on them would blow up their lungs with air so the saddle was looser, and you had to wait a minute then tighten again or the saddle would be loose and fall under the horse's belly, Good riding Robert.

Funny you saying that. Have known folks who have horses say they are as dumb as a post. Wonder if they had dumb horses or if the horses "took them for a ride"?

When I bought my mare, at under 1 year, the seller said she was very intelligent and we would have to get along or I would need to sell her. She would be dangerous to me. Her mother tried to kill her, so she was hand raised. For some reason she didn't like men. We managed very well. We learned about riding together. She learned to bow and lay flat for me. I never bitted her so we didn't get into dressage. She was very crafty but always cooperative for me. She was a very bright horse, I loved dearly for all of her 37 years.

I have found, just like people, some are dumb and some are smart.
