It's not upbeat, but it's the best I've been able to come up with that seems to explain the big picture. It also describes the evil of it all analogously to prior insanities, like Naziism. I.e., these people become so arrogant that they think they can plan such major agendas such that they will satisfy some utilitarian criteria that renders it benevolent somehow. But there is no way they can foresee the unintended consequences that will unfold with an agenda of that magnitude and complexity. Extreme arrogance seems to always be married to that degree of stupidity when brain damage isn't the cause of it.
