The false idea is that "profit" makes everything more "efficient", but - as Noam Chomsky explained, the goal of any corporation is to maximize profit, delivering the worst product/ service at the highest price. The social burden when they relocate the production and the cost to the environment are considered "externalities".

Corporate profits have turned America's consumer product into trash, mostly. And yet I find corporations generally to be the antithesis of efficient, as anyone who has every tried to resolve a problem with a consumer product can attest. Of course too, profit-focus has turned us all apparently into mere consumers, and that has been absolutely disastrous for the health of people and the earth.
But of course; they are mostly lead by business majors, who have ZERO understanding of the technical side, but know only how to please their Wallstreet lords and masters, with stock buy backs and other $#itfu*kery (TM “The Juice Media”)…
When the available resources are extracted rather than being invested into the company, one cannot expect good outcomes… see Boeing (for example).
