Medical 'science' does learn from the past, only not that much about medicine. When medicine was practiced as an art form that relied on the successful prevention of disease instead of curing the symptoms there were many fewer professionals, as they weren't needed.
Enter John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie and a guy named Abraham Flexner…

Enter John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie and a guy named Abraham Flexner, and the rest is a history that even Stephen King wouldn't have dreamed up.
i suppose JDR, AC, and the Flexner guy had a lot to do with it BUT those three aren't the only guity ones. it has allso taken legions of moneyhungry and/or simple sheeplike individuals to create what is called the modern healthcare system we have today. considering all the info available to us now, we ought to be entirely done with accepting only-following-orders(or only believing 100% of my establishment indoctrination) as an excuse for grossly reprehensible behaviors from ANY BODY including our healthcare professionals.
Maybe they got mixed up between all the conflicting 'expert reports' about fat, cholesterol, sugar, etc. I now have to be careful with my fat intake. Lost my gallbladder a few years ago and it makes it really easy to remember that it's missing - when I add extra butter on anything or eat a large ice cream or something.
