Thousands upon thousands of pounds and gallons of hazardous materials are transported across our highways and rail lines and through pipelines every single minute of every single day. Many rail lines pass by the back yards of homes, and like roads they pass over rivers, streams and lakes. Pipelines are mostly invisible to the public. I have two major high pressure natural gas pipe lines that cross the residential street I live on. The vast majority of people in my neighborhood don’t even know the pipelines are there. The hazardous chemicals are essential in providing us the quality of life we enjoy. I could give many examples. Considering the amount of hazardous materials in transport major incidents such as the one in Ohio are rare and can happen just about anywhere. The Ohio train derailment caused the release of huge quantities of vinyl chloride. Vinyl chloride is transported as liquid under pressure in a tank car. Vinyl chloride has a boiling point of only 7*F. When released from containment and exposed to temperatures higher than 7*F it will pass from a liquid phase to a gas phase. The gas is heavier than air. It is also flammable and ready to burn if an ignition source is present. If allowed to “run loose”, the question is when and where will it meet up with an ignition source. It may be better to attempt too contain it and ignite in a “safe” place. This appears to be the tactic used by the emergency responders to this incident. Most all hazardous materials in transport are required by the Department of Transportation (DOT) to be placarded (labeled) for recognition by emergency responders. Each and every emergency response vehicle is supposed to be equipped with a DOT manual. Vinyl chloride is used in the manufacturing of PVC plastic. Just about every house built in the past 50+ years has PVC plastic drainage pipes. Prior to that the major drill lines were assembled with cast iron pipes with lead joints. The word “plumber” derives from the Latin word for lead, plumbum.
Here are a couple more examples of hazardous materials transported in large quantities:
Chlorine - used to purify public water supplies
Ethanol - mixed with gasoline. People drink diluted ethanol.
Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) - used to fuel our homes, bbq’s and many of our industries
Methane (Natural gas) and Sulfuric acid - used to manufacture fertilizer for large scale agriculture

VC is one of the few proven human carcinogens and even has a pretty well understood molecular pathway to mutagenesis, but remember cancer is probabilistic, not certain.
In a VC spill, imo only, it makes sense to be very aware of explosion first of course, and then inhallation. VC remediation is straightforward, and VC breaks down by microbes far easier than the more chlorinated species (VC has 1 chlorine in the 4 available spots that chlorine can occupy on the parent molecule of ethene). The fire in Ohio almost certainly destroyed the lions share of the VC, but likely produced other chlorinated organics; it makes lots of sense to analyze for dioxins, etc. (don't trust that the smoke particulates are safe only because they contain almost no VC). The density of VC makes it float on water, so the remediation is much easier than the "sinkers" such as the ethene compounds with 3 or 4 chlorines, that are more dense than water. It makes sense that water wells should be analyzed for VC, it also would be reasonable if the VC plume never makes it to the screened intervals in water wells where water is drawn from, as VC is about 10% less dense than water. that said I have no idea of where the drinking water in the area is drawn from, and so of course no idea of potential water contamination.
The big issue imo is that most VC is used to make PVC, making it a cornerstone base chemical supporting massive amounts of products America requires. I'd be more concerned with doing a chicken little around this event and end up over-regulating something.

If your last sentence is true, and I have no reason to suspect it isn't, then, um, thats a big problem in of itself.

Ph.D. Environmental Toxicologist here who's worked VC and TCE before.
VC is one of the few proven human carcinogens and even has a pretty well understood molecular pathway to mutagenesis, but remember cancer is probabilistic, not certain.
In a VC spill, imo only, it makes sense to be very aware of explosion first of course, and then inhallation. VC remediation is straightforward, and VC breaks down by microbes far easier than the more chlorinated species (VC has 1 chlorine in the 4 available spots that chlorine can occupy on the parent molecule of ethene). The fire in Ohio almost certainly destroyed the lions share of the VC, but likely produced other chlorinated organics; it makes lots of sense to analyze for dioxins, etc. (don't trust that the smoke particulates are safe only because they contain almost no VC). The density of VC makes it float on water, so the remediation is much easier than the "sinkers" such as the ethene compounds with 3 or 4 chlorines, that are more dense than water. It makes sense that water wells should be analyzed for VC, it also would be reasonable if the VC plume never makes it to the screened intervals in water wells where water is drawn from, as VC is about 10% less dense than water. that said I have no idea of where the drinking water in the area is drawn from, and so of course no idea of potential water contamination.
The big issue imo is that most VC is used to make PVC, making it a cornerstone base chemical supporting massive amounts of products America requires. I'd be more concerned with doing a chicken little around this event and end up over-regulating something.

Don't know how much it's used. Ames is a screen, mostly for new compounds and/or new complex formulations sometimes. Of course that assumes that the test is actually being applied correctly.

Actually have no clue about S9. Heard about the Ames in a Molecular Biology class taught by a guy who nearly worshiped Ames and was appalled by the grief he took bringing out that test. Mutagenesis not carcinogenesis they argued while Ames reported a 90% or so correlation.

VC degraders are ubiquitous and common. "ethenotrophs" is kind of a self defined term, the reason those microbes are all over are because they do other stuff real well, they are not ethene-specific at all.
In my personal opinion, I believe there are specific "evil people" destroying rail lines to stop the flow of food deliveries, & any items considered "necessities" for American's! This last derailment, in my opinion again, was a calculated, planned destruction of yet one more town in America! Disturbing! I watched several news stories with that little-man, Butt-a-jed, & he has to resign, or be forced from this position! Immediately! As well, Articles of Impeachment should have been filed to remove that bad actor pretending to be "chief"! Chief of massive destruction of America, in my personal opinion again!

They were renting until their house in Palos Verdes was being built. I went to Pandor’s Box when I was 16 with the actor Sal Mineo. My parents and all grandparents were democrats. I’ve never voted for one but I have always voted. Only registered Republican in my family. We all have choices, always. Was she blaming the times, places, her parents, her friends or associations? Is she sorry for any harm, asking for forgiveness, repenting? Or, is she finding a ‘new’ audience since her old one has rejected her or is she still trying to wake up others? I commented on her substack post but not about her post.
It is well written, and I understand that world, though a bit differently...and all the baggage that comes with it. Jesus got ahold of me in college and showed me what true, unselfish love looks like. It didn't mean that my life has been perfect and that it didn't take a lot of time to heal those scares, but He saved my life early on and then started growing me into the grateful, child of God I am today. The chains are broken, I have been set free.

Also, in the book/movie discussion from them thar days is “Where Eagles Dare” with a great contrast in acting styles between Burton and Clint, and a great score.
That was my problem with the movie--too condensed. Read the book when in AF and my Capt. borrowed it. Read it back to front and then reread 1/2 of over again. It was that kind of book.

Steve, just from my own experience of having been in a cult (MSIA) and choosing to dig deeper than the propaganda "news", I can assure you that people can change their positions. It sometimes takes a life-altering event. Like mandates!

Thanks for the books. I am reading yours. The story regarding the sham review boards answers so many questions regarding medical professionals abandoning their posts during the pandemic. There are very few independent physicians operating as small business owners. They are almost all salaried and owned by hospital groups. The scariest threat to the MD is loss of license to practice.
