Your comment reminds me of a Chris Rock routine. It's from the 90s so is a little dated:
"Too much food in America! We’ve got so much food in America, America is the only country in the whole world that makes people feel bad for being fat. The only country in the whole world. People are starving all over the world. You’re fat some place else, people are like: “Damn, how did you do that?"
That's one persoective. Historically, fat women were associated with fertility. "Rubenesque" women were in style back in Ruben's era.
That said, however, obesity is a little too much "of a good thing", i.e. excess potential chemical energy storage. Fat storage is controlled by hormones, but it is also related to mitochondrial and metabolic dysfunction. Excess fat accumulation for winter is fine, but overdoing it means the body is not utilizing energy efficiently at the cellular level. Normally, weight is controlled within a set range and excess consumption just turns on the energy "wasting" uncoupled mode in the electron transport chain to burn it off. When the body is not functioning normally through nutrient deficiencies, toxicities, or senescence, energy metabolism is impaired and a balance can't be maintained.
Reminds me of a comedy skit, I think it was In Living Color, where a woman from Afghanistan was on Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, and the question she got was, "What is a condition where you always think you're too fat, and avoid food?" She acted really puzzled, like, "Who does that?" The tension was she could've done so much with the money she could've won if she got the correct answer, but she couldn't think of the answer, which was anorexia.
That's funny, but gives an undeserved "nod" to the false "calories in, calories out" hypothesis. You don't cure obesity with exercise.
