In future when I put water in at the cabin I have put in a 3" pipe to carry the 1" well pipe so if disaster strikes I can pull out the 1" well line and replace it. Compared to the cost of digging the trench, putting in the pipe, restoring the ground cover, etc, the cost of an extra 3" carrying pipe is peanuts.
At least the weather was nicer when our repair was done. And we hired someone, so the pain and suffering for doing the repair was just in my wallet!
The water line to us was busted by a dozen or so trips by really big dump trucks dumping sand at a new construction some 10-15 ft away from it.

Any hope for compensation?
Nope.
Ouch!
