I love sweets! The last let’s say four years I have figured out they are killing me. At the beginning of figuring this out, off and on I would get a sharing size bag of peanut M&M’s and in my truck I would eat them when driving. They really taste great. My knees and left hip began to have massive pain, but at the beginning I didn’t get it. My hip got so bad in pain I would leave my leg hanging out of my pick up truck and all at once I would pick it up in dyer pain yell and put my leg in the truck. Once I stopped eating the M&M’s my pain subsided. Now I notice if I eat just a little extra sugary processed foods, I love those small pies, (don’t hate me for being honest) maybe and a candy bar my joint pain starts to flair up. I turned 60 last Tuesday and I absolutely can’t eat the way I once did. Sugary foods, chocolate, pies, cakes, etc are my kryptonite!! Did I mention my mother was 100% Italian.
Happy Belated Birthday, James. Here is an interesting story: A woman in our local post office had a knee replacement about 2-yrs. ago. Whenever I happened to be in the post office, I would ask her how she was feeling & doing. Each & every time, she said she was still in a lot of pain & had a lot of swelling, in spite of many follow-up appointments & physical therapy. Most of the time I did not even need to ask her as her pain was written all over her face. Not that long ago, when I was in the post office, she was all smiles. I asked her how she was feeling & she said she felt great. I asked her what had changed & if she had been eating differently. She said she went to a Functional Doctor who put her on a anti-inflammatory diet. In no time, she was free of pain & no longer had swelling. This is a perfect example of how our diet can affect our health. As far as loving sweets, I am right there with you! I do try to limit the sweets but truthfully, I am always looking for a little something sweet - even just a cookie now & then. My favorite is either a well made coconut cake or a piece of 7-layer cake.
Years ago I had my blood tested for 100 different foods for food sensitivities. I was sensitive to eggs yeast milk and sesame. They put me on a two day rotation diet eliminating those foods and I was able to choose from 10 meats and 10 vegetables and a few starches and mostly water and tea to drink. I was astonished at how much energy I had and how little sleep I required to feel great. The whites of my eyes were white again my allergies went away my postnasal drip went away and I could smell the grass in the fields. All my senses are heightened to the nth degree. It was wonderful! All my joint pain went away. what we put in our bodies is so important. They said that people crave foods that they are sensitive to. For instance Mexicans crave corn products. In my case I loved milk and eggs and bread. When I eliminated those foods from my diet my health improved times 10!
Agree 100% Gail!! Good for you! I've changed my PC doc to a lady more functionally inclined again and was actually going to talk with her about that kind of test. Thanks for the reminder! ; > )
This was over 10 years ago when I followed the diet perfectly for 3 months and got those fabulous results. Over time I backslid but not totally. I learned a lot and experienced the truth of how great I could feel if I did not succumb to old habits and comfort foods. It was so easy with the support and guidance and choice to "just do it" and with immediate rewards. Life happens and old habits return. It is a constant choice and decision day by day. Almost like any other "addict"....one day at a time!
I see you as a Strong Lady but Kind too. You chose a path and pretty much clung to it. The dividends were in the satisfaction which was All your own to celebrate and take on more challenges. Thank you for your Kind compliment...tis better to laugh then cry.

I don't think just a little will hurt you. I have a friend who adores sweets but recently discovered he is pre-diabetic. He found a product called "Choc Zero" that offers a variety of sweets and no sugar!
There is a problem with “just a little “. It never stops with a little. The bag of chips…. The chocolate 🍫 bar…. Popcorn…. It always calls to you like cocaine and you’re never done till it’s utterly gone. For me, abstinence is the holy grail.
Some people can do it. I said my mom could down 3 glasses of wine of an evening, but sweets-ehh. She could eat a little piece of real good chocolate, maybe every couple months to a year. I found a big bag of very good chocolate in her pantry hardly touched. I think she bought it for my sister when she visited, but sis didn't get back until mom passed.
Nonsense. Richard Pryor had a comedy routine about cocaine. He said (approximately) that some people he'd known had been doing cocaine for fifteen years and they weren't hooked.
I was pretty much raised to avoid candies. My weakness is chips/ salty stuff. Thank heavens have that stopper. I've been substituting such as fruit - berries, small tomatoes and the ilk for snacking. Some are on the natural sweet side.
I go with nuts, altho that too is a caution as they are Not low fat. Macadamias are a favorite just cause of the sweeter taste. I try real hard to do a limit of 10 maybe 2 x daily.
Sure, I'm aware of fats, especially after the Keto diet. Nuts have carbs too, so best to limit. Just like chips about anything can become an overindulgence if we let it. Thanks.
You can make your own chips using organic sliced potatoes and frying them in tallow and adding pure sea salt. Or, you can roast them, tossing them first in a little olive oil and adding pure sea salt to taste.
I have many fine memories of driving coast2coast, border2border hopped up on black coffee and peanut M&Ms, watching those first AV-8Bs dancing on the tarmac at Quantico in the early 80s with a bag of, yes, peanut M&Ms and my Bible, and there’s a half consumed Costco sized tub of 😉 peanut M&Ms in the pantry - I don’t go thru them as I use to, kind’a prefer bars of dark chocolate, and like me this tub is nearing the official use by date. Other than having to deal with the dairy, far as I know I’ve never had inflammatory issues - unlike dark beer which is chock-a-block with purines. Now days my beer cellar sits dark, tea in a variety of hues has replaced coffee (for decades) and my sweet tooth is mostly sated with honey.
Still, Truly, the food scientists who gave us peanut M&Ms, Snickers and Fast Break treats were kissed by the sweet gods.
No kidding, James! I used to be able to eat a spicy East Indian late night munchie, no more. Indigestion is a bummer. Carbs are my weakness...It doesn't get easier to stay healthy as I age, I am always having to up the bar.
Oh my James, you and I are foodie twins!! Peanut M&Ms have been my nemesis since practically the dawn of my life, along with chocolate chip cookies, ice cream, Snickers, blah, blah, blah. I've mentioned my maternal grandmother treating me if I followed instructions with bathtime/bedtime etc. I could weigh 500lbs if I didn't attempt a stop to the sugar devil. Think of all those dyes in those M&Ms too! I fight every day and tho at this time I need 12lbs gone, I feel so much better for not giving in to temptation on a daily basis. It's been indicated people find their sugar fix in 1 of 2 ways. 1 group leans to sweets (me), 1 group leans to alcohol. My dad was definitely sweets, my mom loved her glass (or 3) of wine.
Yep. I made the mistake of 'treating myself' not to long ago to several handfuls of those lil peanut devils - oh, my ache stomach and left hand cramped up from tendonitis. I also can get low back pain altho a daily walk helps with that.
I did not grow up with sweets so I arrived late to the addiction. I quickly learned to toss back the M&M peanuts (share bag) but then jumped to the Head of the class with 1/2 lb boxes from a CA celebrated candy shop. Enough of that I'm interested in your hip and leg. Sounds like you might have Sciatica. I have it! It started in my lower back then down my left hip and into my left leg. Did I understand that you drive with your pained leg out the door? Hanging it out the window would be safer don't you think? You're a Spring Chicken give it a Try.
At that time my hip pain and both my knees were inflamed joint pain. My hip was so bad I went to the doctor and got an X-ray on my hip. He gave me an anti inflammatory meloxicam and in one day, almost immediately the stabbing pain subsided. You think it would be obvious what the problem is but it took me a little while to figure it out. I still have arthritis in my knees but I can work I hope for a long time. When I would pull my left leg into the truck the pain was staggering.
Hey, you two. Do either of you use magnesium? It's in epsom salts, also there is a spray. We used it when mom had pains in her back from cancer. Here is a link on it, if you are interested:
Thank you for the response. I have an aged bottle of Meloxicam, still half full, guess it didn't help me. I'll give it another chance. You're pretty young to have arthritis. How about a couple of knee braces the pressure helps, I think, I hope. I got one at CVS. WE Will prevail Kid.
Funny with the meloxicam, I went into my drawer to see what it was he had given me. I had gotten a refill to have it. I may have taken one or two out of the refill but it did help me. My knees are work related, I have gone up and down ladders and kneel as a carpenter for 40 years, they’re pretty worn out. Eventually if I can afford to take the time off I should get them replaced.
Ha, you revived my interest, and hope, for the meloxicam. I would venture that wonky knees are not reliable on ladder rungs and slippery roofs. Be kind and get One replaced soon. The Knee Men only replace one at a time. There's a recovery time in between procedures. Your Busy Time is coming up soon! You don't want to sit out Summer...
No there not good on roofs, I’ve curtailed certain roof jobs depending on what they are. I’m renovating a big Victorian home in West Roxbury now, 3 bathrooms and a kitchen so it’s hard to get time off. This job has a deadline of May 3rd. Very difficult to say the least.
Yes many great sub contractors. The house had old knob and tube wiring which we replaced. Basically 100% plumbing change and added a beautiful master bath. I wrote about the building inspector who’s a friend from years ago. He’s a great guy!
Going into Construction used to be a prime target for young men. The trade was taught in every school a dozen decades ago. Renovating a house from the Victorian era has got to be very special...
I just took my license 12 hour continuing Ed course for my builders license. 6 hours in classroom and 6 hours on line. If I were 20 years old again I would not want anything to do with running a construction company. Like every aspect of our lives it has been taken over by bureaucrats that never built anything. The code writers are corrupted by donations and lobbyists from businesses with interests. It’s so bad they have put off implementation of the new code book until August because the people that wrote it don’t even know what it means, it’s insanity these new energy codes. They figure if 30 inches of insulation is good 60 inches must be better, but how your supposed to fit it into a building and get someone to pay for it is another thing!! I should have been a dentist🙄.
James I too love sweets- particularly chocolate! But we only eat dark chocolate (85%) and we limit how much we eat. And if we are eating out and there is a chocolate dessert we go for it and don’t feel guilty. No sugar in our house and no cookies or unhealthy candy. And we snack on healthy almond butter or sunflower butter. Works for us! God bless! 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
I’ve always had a sweet tooth myself! I’ll be 58 in May, so we’re close in age. And yeah, we can’t eat like we used to! But I don’t think I’ll ever give up sweets entirely! Life is too short to be miserable!
As I have commented on this stack several times, humans are among the most diverse, outbred species on the planet and this has to be considered in all forms of treatment and illness prevention.
We all have the same anatomy and physiology. There may be differences in biome but these are the result of environmental factors. No other species is considered individually unique when it comes to diet. Our problem is that we have been eating a diet inappropriate for our species for a few thousand years and we are now in the end stage with a horrible diet causing epidemics of chronic disease.
Dear Drs Malone, you are just what the Dr ordered thank you! This is why I look forward to your gardening tips, I've already picked up some from you and can't wait to try them this year. I love very rural but, it is very hard to find organic produce so I must succeed at growing my own thank you again!
I lived in Italy for 2 years when i was younger, when I had my heart attack in 2018 my doctor told me to eat a meditaerranean diet, I told him I had been following a mediterannean diet since 1977 when I returned from italy, a lot of pasta, a lot of bread and a lot of pizza, he said that was not a med. diet, well when I lived there that was ALL they ate and salad of course. BUT they walked a lot!
Your eat your green vegetable pics, Broccoli is my favorite green vegetable, I could eat a whole plate of it with just a little butter, salt and pepper!
My newest favorite green is brussels sprouts! Lightly roasted with garlic, italian seasoning, salt and pepper, and just a bit of butter...so delicious!
THANK YOU, Dr. Malone, for this very timely information.
ALMIGHTY GOD recently led us to a MD that is also a licensed integrative medicine doctor. He did extensive blood work and now we each have his customized recommendations for detox, diet, exercise.
We have been eating pretty clean BUT these additional changes will be challenging. PRAYING for self discipline to make these healthy changes...permanently. The two of you are EXCELLENT role models!
While I agree with the majority of the article, I am no longer a fan of intermittent fasting. It raises stress hormones, can lead to adrenal failure, and lowers metabolism. While you will see results initially bc of the caloric restriction, you will eventually gain it back. I highly recommend reading the late Ray Peat’s work. If you want to follow someone who follows Peat’s work: Jay Feldman, Mike Fave, Georgi Dinkov, and Ashley Armstrong are a few.
When I was young, I loved everything "sweet and fried" and hated everything called a vegetable. After my father died of a heart attack caused mainly by his diet, I decided to change my living habits. Now the sweet's and the vegetables have changed places in my life. The body is so resilient when properly exercised and fed. Two years + after I got serious about my health, I noticed an unpleasant physical reaction if I ate sweet's or anything fried.
Disappointing to gather Italy's version of the Mediterranean diet has become a thing of the past. With the UN 2030 attacks on protein sources and farmers in particular, one wonders where this will be headed. All the more important where RFK Jr and HHS take us.
Couple articles. One speculates a replay of the Covidcrisis via Bird flu is underway. Cites similarities. Suggests
"The second major step the Trump administration needs to take is to disband the White House Office of Pandemic Preparedness and Response Policy (OPPR), something the president had vowed to do as a candidate in April 2024, if elected. As Baker puts it: “Mr. Trump’s instinct was correct then, and it remains correct now.”
In part as relates to its vaccine entusiasm and One Health bent.
The other article covers the industry now pushing for a vaccine that doesnt have to be injected. More food contaminations of eggs and meat?
I'm glad you're sorting out the options and the good news we've been heading in better eating strategies here in the States.
Jean, your comment made me remember I wanted to post this and get reactions:
"Dr. David Weldon Demise Indicates Senate Panel Compromised by Vaccine Ideology", Deep Psychological Bias Makes it Impossible to be Objective on Safety Data.
They just pulled Weldons nomination. He did write about what happened. Two R senators had a problem with his vax views. It's a pity RFK Jr didn't evidently coach him on how to better finesse the topic. He reported some pretty convincing reasons for his views. I may not have the commission in question in mind, but a Commission is called off. Makary said he will be reviewing the commissions to assure appropriate selections.
If you are referring to the 2 No votes for Weldon - it was the head of the panelj (Cassidy) who has been dicey re vaccines all along - big fan, and the Maine woman. I don't remember if they've been identified as Pharma folks or not.
I was and it goes to my constant concern about the amount of money involved in politics and why I would love to see all out of state money banned from all in state elections ( including federal offices).
I agree with most of this but have to disagree with the need for vegetables. For starters, they don't want to be eaten and they defend against predators with anti-nutrients. Animal sourced foods can meet all your nutritional needs without the hazards of anti-nutrients.
Depends on the individual. I went to a support group for people trying to get an answer on their personal pains/illnesses thru food. One man only ate meat (at that time I was amazed), others totally vegan or vegetarian. This is why, I personally, don't want medical profession or groups of adamant folks of one food group or another to tell me what I should/should not eat. This substack is pointing that out. We each must listen to that inner self. I had a coworker who never eats fruit (except avocado).
I get what you are saying about anti-nutrients. Those are the pesky Oxalates for one, but I will still eat my vegies. No living being (plants included) wants to be eaten. But, eat we must.
Dr. Morse highly recommends mostly fruits. Need to read this book. "The China Study" by T. Colin Campbell and Thomas M. Campbell II, based on the China-Cornell-Oxford Project, suggests a strong link between diets high in animal products and chronic diseases, advocating for a whole-food, plant-based diet for optimal health.
I have actually read most of "The China Study". If a particular food group or plan is working for You, I say stick with it. It's my belief it may not work for another. There are many doctors/researchers who have done a study and put out books, (Dr. Atkins comes to mind), who advocate a certain food group or diet. Some could be downright dangerous. My mother did a juicing diet after reading a book to cure cancer. I believe it made her situation worse. Myself, I always loved spinach, beets, potatoes. At a certain point, I went on more vegetarian diet, eating huge spinach salads etc. Ended up with kidney stones. Sugar and anything in the form of excess carbs seems the major problem with most peoples health/weight problems. I wholly agree with the Drs' Malone - and say again, feel it out within your own body.

Here's a plug for simply reducing the carbs: I'm a male, now 63, height 6 foot 3 inches. For the past two years I've been at or near 182 Lb., my current goal weight. For much of that time I've been on a deliberate keto-ish diet. As recently as April 2023, I was at 202 Lb. Several years earlier I was routinely in the 212 or more range. If you go back to my beer drinking days, add another ten Lb. While I’m blessed that I haven’t had any chronic health issues to date, I made these dietary choices because I believe they’ll improve my chances at being healthy for the rest of my life. I still nibble some foods that have empty carbs, but they're a small fraction of what they were in my diet even three years ago. Others find that they must totally avoid the junk. Obviously each person is unique and they should tailor their diet to their needs.
I’ve been around long enough to remember when vegetables out of season were only available from a can. The same was true for fruits. As the youngest of seven children I remember often being hungry (I never starved) and a quick snack was a peeled, raw potato or carrot. Cigarette smoke was everywhere too, not to mention asbestos. It’s amazing some of us are still alive and healthy.

Dang 10 meats! Beef, Chicken, Pork, Liverwurst, Salami, Hot dogs, Rib Eye steak, Hamburger...that's it for me.
Too Funny!
You have some hard rules and I say Bully on You...I hope you, at least, butter your bread Kid. I'm jealous!

I don't think just a little will hurt you. I have a friend who adores sweets but recently discovered he is pre-diabetic. He found a product called "Choc Zero" that offers a variety of sweets and no sugar!

Nonsense. Richard Pryor had a comedy routine about cocaine. He said (approximately) that some people he'd known had been doing cocaine for fifteen years and they weren't hooked.
Ah ha ha ha! Yes, sugar ! The daily cocaine hit I’ve had for low these 76 years but I’m not addicted…. At least not until the next snack attack.
Caramel Corn is having it's way with me!

Three Brazil nuts per day provides the selenium you need in a day!
I'm gonna miss Costco's not having the raw/organic bag in the store.
There are different kinds of fat. Not all fats are bad. Nuts are in the good category. You investigate just what fat is.

Yep. I made the mistake of 'treating myself' not to long ago to several handfuls of those lil peanut devils - oh, my ache stomach and left hand cramped up from tendonitis. I also can get low back pain altho a daily walk helps with that.
Before stopped smoking and gained 70 lbs a 1/4 lb bag of peanut m&ms and 2 beers was a normal after work snack. Loved 'em
I did not grow up with sweets so I arrived late to the addiction. YES SIR it sure is. I like it covered in White Chocolate.
At that time my hip pain and both my knees were inflamed joint pain. My hip was so bad I went to the doctor and got an X-ray on my hip. I do at times use a knee wrap from cvs. I should get a couple of new ones they did help. Not sure where they are honestly.
There's always Amazon Gulp! Gulp! I like to see what I'm buying but but. My knee brace is like a long sock that I pull over my knee...simple, cheap.
Funny with the meloxicam, I went into my drawer to see what it was he had given me. I had gotten a refill to have it. I may have taken one or two out of the refill but it did help me.
You must have a team working with you. Well...
A Creator wouldn't have designed us to be exactly the identical "cloned" same carbon unit species, as that would not work out all that well over time.
Can you say Inbreeding of sorts? I knew you could! Mr. Rogers.....
And you know that how? What pray tell is the appropriate diet for omnivores?
Dear Drs Malone, you are just what the Dr ordered thank you! This is why I look forward to your gardening tips, I've already picked up some from you and can't wait to try them this year. I love very rural but, it is very hard to find organic produce so I must succeed at growing my own thank you again!
I pick up new ideas here too!
It sounds like making homemade food has gone out the window in most countries.
Sad that Italy gave in to Blob Food.
Oh, YES!! To BS ; >0
But when one of those poster ladies finds out that broccoli is a a two-timer.... Mama mia, che desastro!
IF is not a problem if you are keto-adapted. Any stress would be caused by dropping glucose levels in those who rely on glucose for fuel.
Sort of what I have heard too.
So, if it hurts when you do that, don't do that!
Thank you for this timely coverage.
Take care!
Jean, your comment made me remember I wanted to post this and get reactions:
"Dr. David Weldon Demise Indicates Senate Panel Compromised by Vaccine Ideology", Deep Psychological Bias Makes it Impossible to be Objective on Safety Data.
This was RFK Jr's pick for CDC.
Curious where those senators raise campaign funds?
If you are referring to the 2 No votes for Weldon - it was the head of the panelj (Cassidy) who has been dicey re vaccines all along - big fan, and the Maine woman. I don't remember if they've been identified as Pharma folks or not.
I was and it goes to my constant concern about the amount of money involved in politics and why I would love to see all out of state money banned from all in state elections ( including federal offices).
Yes. Here's what I saw:

Agreed! Healthy eating=healthy living! MAHA!!!

I look forward to traveling and "eating out" but after a few days the fare available makes me miss our clean home cooked meals.
