The story behind that quote is quite amazing. In a short article on the question of "Does Power corrupt?" I wrote that morality and spirituality are required in all systems of goverment, and a saint could make any system work. I edited that comment, as moral superstars like Reiner Fuellmich, will never compromise with evil. I think our host, Dr Malone is just such a man.
The story behind the quote is this... The reason Communism would fall with a nation of saints is simple and profound. They would die first, rather then ignore the dictates of their own conscience. And so they would make great citizens, yet poor subjects to human tyranny. There is a detailed account in history that well illustrates this, an encounter Alexander the Great had with just such a man, who even on pain of death threat would not submit to Alexander at all. even a little.
''The history of Alexander the Great and his experience in India is interesting. There he experienced some humbling lessons, failing to cross the Ganges. Greek historians have recorded a fascinating history. Alexander apparently became very interested by the religious culture he encountered. He sent Onesikritos (a disciple of the school of Diogenes) to a great Sanyasi of Northern India, ( Dandamis) compelling him to come visit Alexander, with a contrasting offer of riches if he complied, and loss of his head, if he refused, and proclaimed himself the Son of the God Zeus, and Lord of all men.
The response was given very calmly, " I also am a son of Zeus, if Alexander be such, I want nothing that is Alexanders's, for I am content with what I have, while I see that he wanders with his men over the seas and the land for no advantage, and is never coming to an end of his wanderings. "Go Tell Alexander that God, the supreme being, is never the Author of insolent wrong, but is the creator of light, of peace, of life, of water, of the body of man and of souls; he receives all men when death sets them free... "Alexander is no god, since he must taste of death. How can such as he be the world's master, when he has not yet set himself on the throne of inner universal dominion? ... Most nations have not so much as heard of his name!" He continued... " The gifts Alexander promises are useless to me. The things I prize and find of real worth are these trees, which are my shelter, blooming plants, which provide my daily food, and water, which assuages my thirst. Possessions amassed with anxious thought, are likely to prove ruinous to those that gather them, causing only the sorrow and vexation that afflict all unenlightened men. ... I go wherever I please, unencumbered by material cares.""Should Alexander cut off my head, he cannot also destroy my soul. My head, then silent, and my body, like a torn garment, will remain on earth, ... " I then, becoming spirit, shall ascend to God. He clothed us all in flesh and put us on earth to prove whether when here below, we shall live obedient to his ordinances; and he shall require of us when we depart, an account of our lives. He is the judge of all wrongdoing, the groans of the oppressed ordain the punishment of the oppressor. " Let Alexander terrify with threats men who wish for wealth, and dread death, Against the Brahmins his weapons are powerless, we neither love gold, or fear death. Go then and tell Alexander this, Dandamis has no need of aught that is yours, and therefore will not go to you; and, if you want anything from Dandamis, come you to him."
Another place to find this quote is in the important book, Autobiography of a Yogi, written by Paramahansa Yogananda. A notarized letter by the Forest Lawn mortuary director (Glendale -Los Angeles- California) stated that his body did not decay after death (March 7, 1952) so he was one such example of what Dandamis represented..
I seem to notice misspellings whether I try or not... "to prove whether " "and dread death" I have read the Bhagavad Gita numerous times, this was a good analogy.
