After government bureaucracy, one of our biggest contributors to this problem is the massive corporatization of US medical care. I had gotten out of corporate care with exception of a PCP I have a long relationship with and who I really like. It's tough finding independent specialists, labs, etc. but well worth it. Just this week I'm in the process of leaving my PCP for an independent after a huge hassle over seeking treatment for a simple matter of a UTI. No problem with my doc--but getting through the firewall of idiocy up front was like climbing Everest! Took some searching, but I found a really good doc in an independent practice who has the common sense and the one-on-one approach I expect in a doctor.
