We also had lived in Nicaragua very near Costa Rica, and I knew for a fact that they ate a lot of animal proteins and eggs. Doing more research, I found that the whole Blue Zone thing was a business, and has been sold to the Seventh Day Adventists (vegetarians). I read Dr. Catherine Shanahan's book Deep Nutrition and it totally changed how we eat, and I feel SO much better than I used to.
I have been to Loma Linda, Ca. and they have the best vegan restaurants in the nation. I don't think the statistics lie. He may not have wanted to encourage that type of eating behavior.

Oprah Winfrey almost lost a lawsuit filed against her by the Texas Cattle Industry because she interviewed a man who wrote a book critical of beef production methods and the fact that the cattle are feed corn rather than grass. Over consumption of 6 Omega fatty acids versus 3 Omega fatty acids has a detrimental impact on heart conditions. They were backed up by the corn producers which find their product in various forms in 75% of processed food products and in your gas tank! Coke loves them because liquid corn syrup is cheaper than sugar! Now we have petri dish muscle cells being pushed to replace red meat.
Just as butter was bad for you because they were pushing margarine, which is cheaper, they were saying eggs are a source of that BAD cholesterol which all cells in your body need. In addition, they moved chickens into tin barns and artificial sunlight and the over feed chickens started breaking their legs due to the added weight. I took the same road after 25 years of a vegetarian diet, and am so much healthier for it. One important point that I did not see in your post (I may have missed it!) is that consumption of meat from grass-fed cows is essential. Same goes for free-range chickens. Good message. I am 60, and eat 6 soft boiled eggs for breakfast daily. These are fresh, organic eggs from our chickens. I have no heart disease, diabetes or blood pressure issues. In college I ate 10-12 eggs daily -- I never credited their egg lies. I also eat grass fed rather than grain fed meats, and I exercise (11 cows and 50 sheep keep me regular in my routine). They also lied about carbs and cornflakes....

Watched a couple 'Foodie' videos (probably ETV) One where she visited the source for her eggs. They offered 2 qualities.Very clean quarters and calm chickens. The high quality operation was unbelievably mechanized. Those chicken seemed to have learned and were satisfied with the setup. Saw another video of regular operation. Hens looked stressed, disheveled and too many with too little space. The zoo had a very small chicken operation. Offered a couple of them to the aged tigers to stimulate them, sans much success. Traumatic for the chiken keeper.
The most chickens I had at any given time was three not including my rooster. My son and I had more eggs than we could eat so I would bring a carton to work for a co-worker almost once a week. He made several claims as to why these brown eggs were so much better than those from the grocery.

Some months ago, you mentioned in one of your articles that you suffered an attack of gout. I am 57, and until May of 2022, thought I had escaped the same gout affliction that had affected my dad and uncle for decades. I was slammed for an uncharacteristic 7 weeks with my first attack, or at least the first that I recognized as such. It was the worst time of my life. My bloodwork showed out-of-range values, and for a while I thought I was dying. After many doctor visits spread over multiple specialties, I still have no explanations for the out-of-range values.
After suffering from the attack for 7 weeks, I finally gave up my resistance to medical dependency, and went on allopurinol. At the time I read multiple resources that advised NOT to go on that medication while an attack was still active. Luckily for me, a podiatrist was willing to prescribe it, and it worked almost immediately. I have resumed a mostly normal condition of health, at least as far as age and the psychological torments of current circumstances will allow.
No one had to persuade me to go off red meat, because I had absolutely no interest in indulging in any foods that might trigger another attack. I counted eggs as lifesavers, discovering that they were very low in purines, and along with dairy these were the only protein sources that I trusted for a while. I have gradually resumed poultry consumption, but still mostly avoid beef and pork.

Gout is associated with excess uric acid build up in the body, which may be caused by kidney deficiency which is supposed to remove it, and that is usually associated with niacin, vitamin B (3-12/all of them,) and Iron deficiencies. As I've gotten older, I've found that my kidneys don't like me to eat a lot of animal protein. I get plenty of vitamins because I eat plenty of plants and my eggs, Eggland's Best Organic Eggs, come from hens who eat powerful vegetarian food. (The hens are also uncaged and can go outside when they want.) My body also doesn't like too much iron, but I make sure I get enough to keep myself healthy. Once I reached menopause, I needed less for the obvious reason.
Finally I eat no extra salt with anything. My eggs have some natural sodium, as do the organic peas and potatoes I eat and the organic Ezekiel bread. And my body loves unsalted sardines in water occasionally and they have quite a bit of natural sodium. I gotta' have some sodium, of course, so I prefer to get it from food.
Yes, and I forgot to mention that there's been a lot of studies on Lead levels in the drinking water contributing to kidney disease, which gout is a symptom of, so I tell people to diversify their food & water sources, so that the immune system doesn't get overwhelmed, and it can still fight off or detox when you rotate what you are eating and drinking as best as possible...good for you for prioritizing your health! I also have to be careful with meats like chicken that have arsenic in them, because it causes me to have thyroid issues, so I get all of my meat from farmers now...
I agree with you about the water. My husband and I have been using the Pur water filter on our kitchen sink since it first became available in the early 2000's. And I also drink some bottled spring water.
You can get organic chicken. Whole Foods has it, as does one of my local groceries. As you can probably tell, I live in an urban area so I have to rely on grocery stores.

Yes!! We changed our diet to high animal protein, very low carb, very low sugar in 2020, best decision, health wise, ever. Please note that after eating like this for the past several years, if you eat just a little carbs and sugar it piles the weight back on very quickly, (We’re in our late 50s) so it has to be a permanent change. Intermittent fasting is definitely the key, we have found. We only eat two meals a day and both within 7-8 hours. Some people do it with only 6 hours between meals, which we’re found is too close. European doctors knew that sugar was the health hazard, not animal fats. Cholesterol is brain food!
Congratulations on your diet change and weight loss. The few vegetarians I have known over the years seemed to catch everything that went around and were sick so often! I believe in eating in moderation and also, enjoying what you eat! There seems to be an effort to remove so many of life’s pleasures from us humans! I tried for 20 years to convince people that there is a genuine, ancient, healthy way to eat and it requires eliminating processed food, most processed sugar, eating more fruits and vegetables and, yes, meat. People always take things to extreme though. When the Atkins diet came out the '30 carb daily limit' was not inaccurate for losing weight but it was only a piece of the whole story. Like all diets, it worked for the short term.
My journey was to do what I always do, ask questions first. My conclusion, after writing a column on healthy low card dieting was - if you have to lose weight, pick a diet you can live with or you will not only get bored and revert back to your old way of eating, you will gain all the lost weight, then some and probably impact your overall health.
Eating 'healthy' requires moderation, eating high value carbs, which mean fruit and vegetables, and the protein source that has served humankind for millennia - meat.

My late father-in-law, the preeminent cardiologist in the Philippines before legally immigrating to the U.S. in the early 1960s, where he taught cardio-electrophysiology at Seton Hall University College of Medicine, told me decades ago that the lecithin in egg whites, balances out the cholesterol in egg yolks. I never looked back & enjoy eating eggs whenever I please. A wise & highly intelligent physician & scientist, he is also listed in the Who's Who of medicine for his work on the effects of vitamin B1 on the heart & trained with Carl Wiggins at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio. Further, cholesterol is not the bad guy that it is made out to be. It is vitally important for many bodily functions, especially our nerves. The brain has a significant amount of cholesterol & would not be able to function properly without it. Like most everything else that emanates from our federal health agencies, their recommendations on nearly everything needs to be questioned.
Rather than overly focus on your total cholesterol, pay closer attention to your entire lipid profile (HDL, LDL). A higher HDL (high-density) is more cardio-protective. LDL (low-density) is more concerning. I have taken a good quality fish oil capsule for many years to help keep my HDL up. Changes in your diet can help to lower your LDL. I have also taken Red Yeast Rice at intervals to help keep my LDL lower. It functions similarly to a statin, so best to check liver enzymes if you plan to stay on it for any length of time.
Right thanks. I do all that. The fish oil lowered my triglycerides last year, but it’s been up this year also. I’ve been taking red yeast rice two/day but now am doing 4/ day so we’ll see. The hardest thing for me to give up right now is the half and half in my coffee and wine (one glass at bedtime). 🙁

One of the problems with all this ADHD diagnosing is the refusal of teachers to pay attention to the fact that many children have too much natural energy to sit still for even half an hour. And I say this as a former teacher, especially since as a student with a lot of physical and mental energy, I had a whole lot of trouble staying still. I forced myself to do it because if I hadn't my parents would have made me pay for it in all sorts of nasty ways.

My family was a farming and ranching family with a steady diet of meat and eggs (a lot of both) and all have lived into their upper 90's. The more I've listened to people like you, the healthier I've become!
I've read a few articles on Yahoo that say that eggs are good for people, especially seniors (!) and that statins are useless for stopping heart attacks. And several years ago I read about a study that showed that people whose LDL was under 160 suffered from depression. And then very recently I read another article that said that dementia increased with too much good (HDL) cholesterol, again on Yahoo.
The reason I'm mentioning Yahoo as my source is because if these studies that question old medical dogma are appearing there, then the dogma is actually changing.
The truth is to have a varied diet that suits your health. If a lot of meat does it, then go for it. If a plant-based diet does it, go for it. If a fish/vegetarian diet does it go for it.
Just stay from processed foods, because there have been studies since the 1990's that consistently show that chemical additives can cause cancer. And, as I've written before, there's solid medical evidence that chemicals can cause ADHD, the autism spectrum, depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. I may have made a mistake about the LDL level since I read the article several years ago. I just checked online and it said that 160 was considered the beginning of a high level, so maybe the article said 60...? Anyway, too little LDL can be dangerous. Oh--the article I read about high HDL causing dementia said LDL cholesterol wasn't a factor.
Still, I really have my doubts about these medically contrived cholesterol levels, especially after that statin study.
Not very many years ago a cholesterol level of 300 was considered average. Then they moved it down to 250. Still weren't selling enough statins and they moved it to 200. That is way too low for health!

We couldn't go see him cause we wouldn't take the death jab. He passed away so is in a better place.

I took the same road after 25 years of a vegetarian diet, and am so much healthier for it. One important point that I did not see in your post (I may have missed it!) is that consumption of meat from grass-fed cows is essential. Same goes for free-range chickens. I made so many mistakes that when I went to Cosmetology school I knew what was being taught first hand. We didn't have access to blue etc. or I would have tried it. Good message. I am 60, and eat 6 soft boiled eggs for breakfast daily. These are fresh, organic eggs from our chickens. I have no heart disease, diabetes or blood pressure issues. In college I ate 10-12 eggs daily -- I never credited their egg lies. I also eat grass fed rather than grain fed meats, and I exercise (11 cows and 50 sheep keep me regular in my routine). They also lied about carbs and cornflakes....

Watched a couple 'Foodie' videos (probably ETV) One where she visited the source for her eggs. They offered 2 qualities.Very clean quarters and calm chickens. The high quality operation was unbelievably mechanized. Those chicken seemed to have learned and were satisfied with the setup. Saw another video of regular operation. Hens looked stressed, disheveled and too many with too little space. The zoo had a very small chicken operation. Offered a couple of them to the aged tigers to stimulate them, sans much success. Traumatic for the chiken keeper.
The most chickens I had at any given time was three not including my rooster. My son and I had more eggs than we could eat so I would bring a carton to work for a co-worker almost once a week. He made several claims as to why these brown eggs were so much better than those from the grocery.

I’ll confirm your nuts statement. My in-laws always had a few bowls of shelled nuts and nut crackers on den and kitchen tables. Very odd to me.. my family did not snack). They also had an enormous amount, in my opinion, of the best cuts of beef, pork and occasionally chicken. Small folks. She loved cooking and was Syrian which incorporates a large Mediterranean diet. No sweets, really. At 87 and 93, neither had heart trouble, cancer, or even broke a bone.

Some months ago, you mentioned in one of your articles that you suffered an attack of gout. I am 57, and until May of 2022, thought I had escaped the same gout affliction that had affected my dad and uncle for decades. I was slammed for an uncharacteristic 7 weeks with my first attack, or at least the first that I recognized as such. It was the worst time of my life. My bloodwork showed out-of-range values, and for a while I thought I was dying. After many doctor visits spread over multiple specialties, I still have no explanations for the out-of-range values.
After suffering from the attack for 7 weeks, I finally gave up my resistance to medical dependency, and went on allopurinol. At the time I read multiple resources that advised NOT to go on that medication while an attack was still active. Luckily for me, a podiatrist was willing to prescribe it, and it worked almost immediately. I have resumed a mostly normal condition of health, at least as far as age and the psychological torments of current circumstances will allow.
No one had to persuade me to go off red meat, because I had absolutely no interest in indulging in any foods that might trigger another attack. I counted eggs as lifesavers, discovering that they were very low in purines, and along with dairy these were the only protein sources that I trusted for a while. I have gradually resumed poultry consumption, but still mostly avoid beef and pork.
From Wikipedia I read that allopurinol was approved for use in 1966, the year of my birth, and is on the WHO list of essential medicines. Imagine that: a medicine that works, a medicine that's cheap, a medicine developed by pharma companies that back then wanted to ease human suffering.

How do folks prevent gout?
Gout is associated with excess uric acid build up in the body, which may be caused by kidney deficiency which is supposed to remove it, and that is usually associated with niacin, vitamin B (3-12/all of them,) and Iron deficiencies. There are many articles about this, but be careful, as I just looked to try to give you a good link to one, and they all have been manipulated to point towards drug dependency, so I can only suggest that you follow and subscribe to Dr Mercola, whom I have been following for over 30 years, and has been a phenomenal resource for my health & preventative medicine!

As I've gotten older, I've found that my kidneys don't like me to eat a lot of animal protein. I get plenty of vitamins because I eat plenty of plants and my eggs, Eggland's Best Organic Eggs, come from hens who eat powerful vegetarian food. (The hens are also uncaged and can go outside when they want.) My body also doesn't like too much iron, but I make sure I get enough to keep myself healthy. Once I reached menopause, I needed less for the obvious reason.
Finally I eat no extra salt with anything. My eggs have some natural sodium, as do the organic peas and potatoes I eat and the organic Ezekiel bread. And my body loves unsalted sardines in water occasionally and they have quite a bit of natural sodium. I gotta' have some sodium, of course, so I prefer to get it from food.

Yes, and I forgot to mention that there's been a lot of studies on Lead levels in the drinking water contributing to kidney disease, which gout is a symptom of, so I tell people to diversify their food & water sources, so that the immune system doesn't get overwhelmed, and it can still fight off or detox when you rotate what you are eating and drinking as best as possible...good for you for prioritizing your health! I also have to be careful with meats like chicken that have arsenic in them, because it causes me to have thyroid issues, so I get all of my meat from farmers now...

I agree with you about the water. My husband and I have been using the Pur water filter on our kitchen sink since it first became available in the early 2000's. And I also drink some bottled spring water.
You can get organic chicken. Whole Foods has it, as does one of my local groceries. As you can probably tell, I live in an urban area so I have to rely on grocery stores.

A friend has gout. I was reading up on it and it seems there are many genes in involved in its expression, where uric acid is not transported effectively out of the kidneys and body. It seems diet changes can help but may not be enough to prevent an attack.

Yes!! We changed our diet to high animal protein, very low carb, very low sugar in 2020, best decision, health wise, ever. Please note that after eating like this for the past several years, if you eat just a little carbs and sugar it piles the weight back on very quickly, (We’re in our late 50s) so it has to be a permanent change. Intermittent fasting is definitely the key, we have found. We only eat two meals a day and both within 7-8 hours. Some people do it with only 6 hours between meals, which we’re found is too close. European doctors knew that sugar was the health hazard, not animal fats. Cholesterol is brain food!

Congratulations on your diet change and weight loss. The few vegetarians I have known over the years seemed to catch everything that went around and were sick so often! I believe in eating in moderation and also, enjoying what you eat! There seems to be an effort to remove so many of life’s pleasures from us humans! We are controlled in many different ways, our sustenance should not be one of them!
The problem is processed food, whether vegan or animal based. Companies making processed food have a goal of profits above all else. Make it as tasty and cheaply as possible with chemicals and preservatives that The Science declares safe and effective.

I tried for 20 years to convince people that there is a genuine, ancient, healthy way to eat and it requires eliminating processed food, most processed sugar, eating more fruits and vegetables and, yes, meat. People always take things to extreme though. When the Atkins diet came out the '30 carb daily limit' was not inaccurate for losing weight but it was only a piece of the whole story. Like all diets, it worked for the short term.
My journey was to do what I always do, ask questions first. My conclusion, after writing a column on healthy low card dieting was - if you have to lose weight, pick a diet you can live with or you will not only get bored and revert back to your old way of eating, you will gain all the lost weight, then some and probably impact your overall health.
Eating 'healthy' requires moderation, eating high value carbs, which mean fruit and vegetables, and the protein source that has served humankind for millennia - meat.
As for paying any attention to the scientism du jour, I do what I did when they declared coconut was bad - I ate it anyway reasoning that coconut has been a staple for Hawaiians forever. Common sense is a valuable tool for navigating this life. Too bad it has been kicked aside.

My late father-in-law, the preeminent cardiologist in the Philippines before legally immigrating to the U.S. in the early 1960s, where he taught cardio-electrophysiology at Seton Hall University College of Medicine, told me decades ago that the lecithin in egg whites, balances out the cholesterol in egg yolks. I never looked back & enjoy eating eggs whenever I please. A wise & highly intelligent physician & scientist, he is also listed in the Who's Who of medicine for his work on the effects of vitamin B1 on the heart & trained with Carl Wiggins at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio. Further, cholesterol is not the bad guy that it is made out to be. It is vitally important for many bodily functions, especially our nerves. The brain has a significant amount of cholesterol & would not be able to function properly without it. Like most everything else that emanates from our federal health agencies, their recommendations on nearly everything needs to be questioned.

Rather than overly focus on your total cholesterol, pay closer attention to your entire lipid profile (HDL, LDL). A higher HDL (high-density) is more cardio-protective. LDL (low-density) is more concerning. I have taken a good quality fish oil capsule for many years to help keep my HDL up. Changes in your diet can help to lower your LDL. I have also taken Red Yeast Rice at intervals to help keep my LDL lower. It functions similarly to a statin, so best to check liver enzymes if you plan to stay on it for any length of time.
Right thanks. I do all that. The fish oil lowered my triglycerides last year, but it’s been up this year also. I’ve been taking red yeast rice two/day but now am doing 4/ day so we’ll see. The hardest thing for me to give up right now is the half and half in my coffee and wine (one glass at bedtime). 🙁

One of the problems with all this ADHD diagnosing is the refusal of teachers to pay attention to the fact that many children have too much natural energy to sit still for even half an hour. And I say this as a former teacher, especially since as a student with a lot of physical and mental energy, I had a whole lot of trouble staying still. I forced myself to do it because if I hadn't my parents would have made me pay for it in all sorts of nasty ways.
And, of course, there's all that sugar and those chemical additives. Since I was born in 1950, there weren't that many chemicals in my food and my mother strenuously controlled my allowance of sugar, so at least I didn't have additional energy boosters.

My family was a farming and ranching family with a steady diet of meat and eggs (a lot of both) and all have lived into their upper 90's. The more I've listened to people like you, the healthier I've become!
I've read a few articles on Yahoo that say that eggs are good for people, especially seniors (!) and that statins are useless for stopping heart attacks. And several years ago I read about a study that showed that people whose LDL was under 160 suffered from depression. And then very recently I read another article that said that dementia increased with too much good (HDL) cholesterol, again on Yahoo.
The reason I'm mentioning Yahoo as my source is because if these studies that question old medical dogma are appearing there, then the dogma is actually changing.
The truth is to have a varied diet that suits your health. If a lot of meat does it, then go for it. If a plant-based diet does it, go for it. If a fish/vegetarian diet does it go for it.
Just stay from processed foods, because there have been studies since the 1990's that consistently show that chemical additives can cause cancer. And, as I've written before, there's solid medical evidence that chemicals can cause ADHD, the autism spectrum, depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. I may have made a mistake about the LDL level since I read the article several years ago. I just checked online and it said that 160 was considered the beginning of a high level, so maybe the article said 60...? Anyway, too little LDL can be dangerous. Oh--the article I read about high HDL causing dementia said LDL cholesterol wasn't a factor.
Still, I really have my doubts about these medically contrived cholesterol levels, especially after that statin study.
Not very many years ago a cholesterol level of 300 was considered average. Then they moved it down to 250. Still weren't selling enough statins and they moved it to 200. That is way too low for health!

We couldn't go see him cause we wouldn't take the death jab. He passed away so is in a better place.
